Borehole Site Readiness Checklist

Complete this checklist before your site survey. Your driller will give a more accurate quote — and spot fewer surprises — if you can answer these questions in advance.

Site Access
  • Is there a clear, direct route into the compound for a truck or rig?
  • Estimate the width of the narrowest entry point (gate, passage, or gap)
  • Is the ground stable enough for heavy equipment? (mud, soft sand, slopes)
  • Are there overhead obstructions — cables, trees, low structures?
  • Where is the nearest point the rig can park if it cannot enter fully?
Proposed Drilling Location
  • Where on the plot do you want the borehole? (front, back, side)
  • Is there space of at least 3–4 metres width around the proposed spot?
  • How far is the proposed location from your septic tank or soakaway? (aim for 15m+ distance as a general guide — confirm with your driller)
  • How far from the nearest building foundation?
  • Is the ground surface compacted, tiled, or bare earth?
Power & Existing Infrastructure
  • Is there an existing mains power supply on the property?
  • What is the power source (single phase / three phase)?
  • Do you have a generator? What is its kVA rating?
  • Is there an existing overhead tank or ground-level storage tank?
  • Is there an existing borehole (even if not working)?
  • Where will the pump control panel be mounted?
Water Use & Expectations
  • How many people live or work at the property?
  • What will the water be used for? (Domestic only / cooking + drinking / irrigation / industrial)
  • Do you need the water to reach overhead tanks? (affects pump selection)
  • What is your average daily water usage estimate, if known?
  • Have you had a water quality test done before? Any known issues (iron, smell, colour)?
Budget & Timeline
  • Do you have a budget range in mind?
  • Are you looking for drilling only, or pump and tank included?
  • When do you need the borehole operational by?
  • Can the site be accessed on weekdays, weekends, or both?
  • Is there someone on-site who can liaise with the drilling team during work?
Bringing clear answers to these questions will help your driller give a more accurate quote and reduce the chance of delays or additional costs on site.
